THIS IS WHERE WE STARTED
Shepherd’s Haven began with a small group of Christian parents who all shared the bond of having children with special needs. These families were meeting to explore and discuss what care options were available for their children once the parents reached a point where they could not offer the level of care they desired for their child.
With over 30,000 special need(s) adults in the Shelby County area, they knew they were not the only families struggling with these questions.
These families wanted a safe, Christ-centered environment for their children and wondered if God might be leading them to create a unique offering of men and women with special needs. They began praying and asking God for clarity and wisdom.
THIS IS WHAT GOD HAS DONE
God directed these families to begin building homes where men and women with special needs could live in a family, home environment. At these homes, the men and women would receive care and love as similar as possible to what their family would give. In 1991, these original families purchased a quiet, 47 acre plot in Fayette County and named it “Shepherd’s Haven.” In 1997, Shepherd’s Haven opened an eight bedroom home for men with special needs and in 2009 opened a second home to serve eight ladies.
As Shepherd’s Haven grew and God allowed more opportunities to serve this special community, Shepherd’s Haven realized a need for a daily outlet for the residents, but also other special needs adults in the community. In 2006, Shepherd’s Haven opened their Day Center. The Day Center meets Monday-Friday, from 8:30-3:30pm at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, TN. While at the Day Center, men and women work on crafts, art, learn music, study the Bible, exercise, go on field trips, serve others, and more. The Day Center offers men and women with special needs a safe, Christ-centered outlet to grow and find further purpose in life.
